Theme walk: brine pipeline

To complement the visit to the salt mine, we recommend the one-hour, easy themed hike along the route of the 1817 brine pipeline. The trail offers you beautiful views of the townscape of Berchtesgaden and the magnificent mountain world. The walk starts directly at the salt mine and ends at Salinenplatz, near the main railway station. But you can also return to the salt mine through the town centre and the historic Nonntal.

A walk through the history of salt

For centuries, salt was the basis for an income necessary for survival for the inhabitants of the small monastery land - the former prince provostship of Berchtesgaden.

On a walk with the Berchtesgaden guides around the salt mine, you will learn about the beginnings of mining, the salt works and brine pipes, the timber industry and the life of the miners.

Schloss Adelsheim museum

This museum is only a 15-minute walk from the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine. Built in 1614, it shows a comprehensive picture of the life of the people in the land between Watzmann and Untersberg in 13 rooms.

The market in

From the Berchtesgaden salt mine, you can take a short walk (approx. 30 minutes on foot) via the historic Nonntal valley to the market town of Berchtesgaden. Stroll through the town via the historic Berchtesgaden market past town houses and visit the charming shops.

Grassl Gentian Distillery

Only three kilometres away from the salt mine is the famous Enzian distillery Grassl.The motto here is “Take your time - drink gentian!” During a free visit to Germany's oldest gentian distillery, you will learn everything about the production of the popular "Grassl-Gebirgs-Enzian".
